Electronic Fit, Function, and Validation: Design to Manufacturing Series (Part 7)

    Electrical design to manufacturingSpring cleaning has come and gone, yet the clutter persists.  In the act of redeeming a missed opportunity for bettering our work environment, the Application Engineering team at Fisher Unitech has sprung into action to create some elbow room, while hard at work servicing manufacturing.  An all-in-one wireless charging phone stand and headset holder takes center stage. We recently saw two design possibilities: The Holster and the Transporter, which both have been designed using a variety of tools and functionality within SOLIDWORKS.

    In both of these designs, we were able to overcome a few challenges that involved loads, stresses, and tolerances. We used 3D scanning, motion analysis, simulation, and 3D printing, among others to put us back on track. In today’s addition to our Design to Manufacturing Series, we detail the electrical aspects required for the scope of this project and the tools used to assist in our product development efforts.

            SOLIDWORKS PCB 2019: Copper Traces and Decals

            SOLIDWORKS PCB 2019In SOLIDWORKS 2019, there are new capabilities for PCB collaboration to be able to import copper as well as decals into SOLIDWORKS. The control can be found in the setting for the collaboration and the first thing you’ll want to use is turn the option off for copper. In my example, I’ve pushed my design from SOLIDWORKS PCB 2019 with the copper option off and opened it inside of SOLIDWORKS Mechanical. In the image to the left, you can see that the decals and graphical representation of the top and bottom layer and there is no inner layer for copper in the design.

            By turning the copper representation on, we’re going to reimport this design from SOLIDWORKS PCB. This new design will bring in additional information for decals and copper representation on all layers.

                New Features Improve Collaboration in SOLIDWORKS PCB 2019

                SOLIDWORKS PCB 2019When you design a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) there are often times when you need to create barriers or height restrictions for component placements as envelopes. To do that, you can place a component called envelope. Once placed, you can change the component properties to be an envelope. You can then mate it into the position where you want the envelope to be placed on your printed circuit board.

                Once complete, you can then push the changes to SOLIDWORKS PCB using Collaboration and pull the change with the addition of the envelope. You can preview the changes, accept them, and the envelope will be placed on the board in the exact location as in mCAD. Later, you can add chamfers in the upper corners to match the additions. This is a powerful and efficient way to create restrictions inside of SOLIDWORKS mechanical and push them over for collaboration with SOLIDWORKS PCB 2019.
