SOLIDWORKS World 2018 First General Session Lays Out Future Direction of Leading Design Software

SOLIDWORKS World 2018 got off to an exhilarating start today in its first general session on February 5th 2018 in Los Angeles, California with the top executives of the company laying out their vision for the future, a high-powered customer story and a keynote speech by MIT Professor Neri Oxman. Top Executives Present Their Vision at SOLIDWORKS World 2018

Bernard Charlès, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer, Dassault Systèmes and Gian Paolo Bassi, Chief Executive Officer, SOLIDWORKS, both spoke on how SOLIDWORKS is following up a string of successful years by giving users the option to transition to its new 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform transcends the industry’s current focus on the 3D geometrical model by providing tools for capturing, storing, sharing, implementing, and validating all aspects of the product development process from conception to delivery.

“Our goal is to empower you, the amazing innovators, to lead an industrial renaissance,” Bassi said, addressing the design engineers that make up the majority of SOLIDWORKS World 2018 attendees. “We are increasing the ability of our products to help you automate and integrate your innovation processes to increase the speed with which you can transform information into knowledge and seamlessly transmit that knowledge within your own and your partners’ organizations.”

New SOLIDWORKS Products Support Innovators

Several innovations were introduced at SOLIDWORKS World 2018 that will help users accomplish these goals. 3DEXPERIENCE Social Collaboration Services provides an open, cloud-based collaboration platform for connecting stakeholders and contributors ranging from the design team to final consumers. Users can collaborate more closely by creating tasks, tracking changes, commenting on proposed design iterations, etc.

SOLIDWORKS 3DEXPERIENCE Xdesign, a cloud-based solid modeling system that runs any time and anywhere on any browser and operating system, was also displayed at SOLIDWORKS World 2018. As an example of the many benefits of this new product, users can take their CAD models with them when they visit customers, managers, partners, and other stakeholders.

Another innovation announced at SOLIDWORKS World 2018 is 3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace Make and 3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace Part Supply which jointly provide an environment in which contract manufacturers and suppliers can interact with SOLIDWORKS users to bridge the gap between the virtual and real-world and improve collaboration efficiency. 3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace Make provides a seamless way for users to source parts by collaborating with leading digital manufacturers with experience in manufacturing processes such as 3D printing, CNC machining, injection molding, sheet metal forming and more. Users can browse off-the-shelf parts in 3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace Part Supply from many leading suppliers and drag and drop them into a SOLIDWORKS model.

Charlès said that these and other innovations contribute to his big dream of going beyond digitizing existing processes to create a, new innovation process that transcends existing innovation methods. "Our vision with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is to transform the design process into a single, virtual, social enterprise that accelerates our users’ ability to do business, innovate, and create value.”

1036 Horsepower Custom Car

SOLIDWORKS World 2018 also introduced several customers who are leading the way in putting innovative design technologies to work. The spotlight was on Ringbrothers, a company based in Spring Green, Wisconsin that makes fiberglass and carbon fiber body parts and delivers one or two unique custom cars per year. This marque customer has long relied on Fisher Unitech to deliver SOLIDWORKS software, support and training. Ringbrothers displayed their 1972 AMC Javelin Defiant! which, the company says, is “arguably the wildest vehicle design ever crafted by the Wisconsin based car builders thanks to its extreme appearance, cutting edge construction techniques and four-digit power output.”

Ringbrothers relied on SOLIDWORKS digital design tools to render the car’s body panels which were then built in their machine shop and carbon fiber facility. Defiant! Is powered by a Wegner Motorsports 6.2-liter Hemi Mopar Helical engine fitted with a Whipple 4.5-liter supercharger that produces a heart-thumping 1,036 horsepower. The Javelin was displayed on the show floor at SOLIDWORKS World and a film in the first general session showed the Ring brothers themselves putting the muscle car through its paces with tires squealing in the parking lot prior to the event.

Structures Based on Biological Principles

The first general session wrapped up with a keynote speech by Neri Oxman, Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and SOLIDWORKS user. Oxman founded and leads the Mediated Matter research group at MIT that conducts research at the intersection of computational design, digital fabrication, materials science and synthetic biology and applies that research to augment the relationship between built, natural and biologic environments, using principles inspired and engineered by nature.

In her keynote speech, Oxman used the term nature as a verb to describe her approach of using multiscale biological shapes and textures as inspiration in developing new designs and fabrication methods. For example, Oxman showed pictures and video of her Digital Construction Platform (DCP) which is primarily designed for autonomously fabricating unique architectural structures using additive, formative and subtractive manufacturing technologies. The DCP incorporates a mobile gantry arm equipped with a 6-axis robot. Oxman provided a time-elapse video showing the DCP with a urethane foam printing head being used to build a doubly curved structure. Oxman pointed out that in more practical applications the device would probably be used to print concrete.

After the first general session concluded, the attendees headed off to a series of breakout sessions, inspired and motivated by SOLIDWORKS vision for transforming their product development process.
